Examination Fever, is it real.

Examination shock or fever is the sudden feeling of uneasiness that most candidates go through before, during and after an examination. Some of these include headache, fever,  diarrhoea, vomiting,  uneasiness, menstruation, blackout,  uneasiness, fidgeting, frustration, etc.

Examination Fever or Shock is real.  It can cause serious health issues to the candidate. It can even cause the candidate to forget what he or she had already learnt.

Examination fright or fever is on the ascendancy these days. This I believe is as a result of our overeliance on examination as the yardstick for success. Most people believe Examination Fever is only for candidates who have not learn prior to the examination. That's a lie. Even the brilliant or even those with high IQ have been experiencing Examination Fever.

Examination Fever can attack anybody. Yes everybody. The only difference is how one handles it. We all have our own way of handling issues.

How to cure Examination Fever?

But,  one truth is that Examination Fever can be cured. Prevention may be difficult, but curing it is easy.

Firstly, the candidate should get rid of fear. Fear is the greatest cause of Examination Fever.  The fear of failure is a great ingredient for Examination Fever. Candidates should be counseled and motivated before examination. This can be done by bringing expert in solving examination fever.

Secondly, candidates should be allowed to participate in several MOCK examinations. MOCK examinations help candidates learn the skills needed during an external examination. MOCK examinations should not be treated as a normal examination,  but rather as a preparatory ground for learning about an examination.

Finally, examination fever can be reduced by advanced preparation.  Candidates in an impending examination should start preparing for the examination long before registration, and the examination itself.  This will save them the stress they go through prior to the examination.

Examination Fever is real, cure it!

Long Sentences Versus Short Sentences

Below is an excerpt of a letter written by a candidate in an examination.
Read it and judge for yourself.

Nana, I am by this letter wanting to express by deepest and most profound gratitude to you for the wonderful reception you bestowed upon me and my family and my family when we paid an unannounced visit to your house on the sudden demise of your father during the yulitide.

A sentence is a group of meaningful words . Simply put a sentence is the group of words which has meaning.

There are three kinds of sentences. These  are Simple, Compound and Complex Sentences.

There is yet another type which most students prefer which is a group of words which make no sense or meaning. These type of sentences also attract low marks.

Candidates who prefer long sentences or complex sentences have the following to contend with.

1. High rate of grammatical errors.
Most of the candidates who like writing long sentences or complex sentences usually have high rate of grammatical errors.  Some of them include wrong punctuation, wrongful amalgamation of words, wrong use of Subject - Verb Agreements,  etc.

2. Break in thought.
Most Of the long sentences identified by Examiners contain disconnected thought or meaningless thoughts. This is due to the inability of candidates to maintain the thought process contained in their sentences.

3. Spelling Errors.
Most candidates have difficulty spelling some words. So the use of long or complex sentences will reveal most of these words and therefore cause the students to loose more marks.

What is not taught in Classroom?

There is great difference between what teachers teach in the classroom and what is required in the Examination HALL.
Examiners require different things from candidates which class teachers do not teach.

For instance, in our schools teachers emphasise on the use of preamble in answering questions.
Examiners however see preamble as a waste of time and unnecessary.

Also, when answering Comprehension Questions, teachers encourage students to Write long sentences. This is however, not important in the Examination Setting. Examiners sometimes accept one word or phrase as an answer to a Comprehenshion Question.

5 things candidates do in school which is punishable in the examinations hall?

1. Students are given more than enough time in school to answer simple questions. Examiners have little time for candidate's scripts. They have deadline to meet. They also aim at achieving a lot within the time frame.

You can also read the mind of the Examiner here.

2. Examiners do not tolerate unnecessary preamble in candidate's work. Marks are not awarded to these preamble. However, in our schools,  teachers encourage the use of preamble.

3. Examiners do not encourage unnecessarily long or complex sentences. This is because complex or long sentences are avenues where candidates loose marks.

You can read Long Sentences Verses Short Sentences.

4. Schools do not punish students who mistakenly or internationally remove sheets from their exercise books. This is however, a punishable offence in an examinations. Candidates are warned not to tear or remove any part of the answer sheet or booklet.

5. Schools only give students questions which dwells mostly on Knowledge and Recalling of facts. They do this to make marking and scoring easy. However, most Examiners will give Application of Knowledge type questions. These questions demand more than just mere recalling of facts and figures, but thorough understanding of the facts and figures and how to use it solve a situation.

Connecting the dots.

Essay type questions demand essay type answers. Essay type answers are usually written in paragraphs.  These paragraphs,  two or three or depending on the question all aim at answering the same question

An essay is a group of well connected and meaningful dots. These dots if disconnected renders the essay meaningless.  Examiners are only interested in how these dots are connected.

Candidates have these dots. They know most a time which dots are appropriate.  The Problem is how to connect these dots.
Most candidates in examination lack the skills needed to connect these dots.

There are words which can be used to connects these dots. Some of these words are Firstly,  Secondly, Thirdly, Furthermore, in addition, Besides,  But, However, Moreover,  etc.

Another point to consider when connecting these dots is that these dots should be connected both Internally and Externally.  This is what is called Inter and Intra Paragraphs Relationships. A paragraph should connected both Internally and Externally.  This makes the essay meaningful.  On the the hand, disconnected paragraphs will make the essay meaningless.

Remember this "a paragraph is not a group of meaningless words, arranged in a meaningless manner". That is not a paragraph.

Examiners would always give marks to scripts with good and well connected Dots. Remember,  that essays are just Dots joined by connectors.
