Who fails who?

The Examiner has failed me.
This is the most popular statement by candidates when the results are released and did not go the way they had expected.  But, who failed who? Is is the candidate who failed him/herself or it is the Examiner who failed the candidate?
Sometimes, one finds it difficult to either blame the students or the Examiner.
Well,  examiners only follow instructions. They follow instructions given by their employers,  this the Examination Bodies. They are warned not to favour or punish any candidate based on region, name, ethnicity, class, religion or gender.  They only assess based on merit. Nothing else.
It therefore the responsibility of the candidates to understand the Examiner.
They should learn what is rewarded and what is punished.

Five things candidates do which causes them to fail examinations.

1. leaving out your name and Index number.
Most candidates who fail examination leave out their names and Index numbers. Since, the Examiner does not know you,  the only option is to give you a fail.

2. Churning out meaningless words and sentences.
Candidates who writes meaningless and ambiguous words and sentences usually fail exams. Some scripts are simply unreadable or meaningless.  This usually puts off the Examiner.

3. Failure to understand and follow rubrics.
Most candidates do not take time to read and understand instructions before answering questions.  They rush to answer questions without first understanding the instructions attached to the questions.

4. Copying friends in the Examination HALL.
Copying in the Examination HALL is a punishable offence.  Examiners do not waste time in scripts which have semblance with other scripts. They will quickly mark you down without any delay.

5. Inadequate Materials to support your answer.
Most candidates do not elaborate and give further explanations to answers to a question.  They provide shallow answers. Some even write a word or a single sentence to questions which demands further answers.

The Examiner's Mind

Essay type Examinations scripts are not marked by machines or computers but by humans. This means that all the necessary ingredients or features should be present before the candidates is given the full marks.

How do examiners think?
Examiners are humans and therefore think just like you. Examiners don't punish candidates for offences they have not committed.

1. Examiners are fair.
They only punish those who wants to be punish. They give marks to those who deserve and deduct marks from those who deviate from the norm.

2. Examiners have no time for meaningless info.
Examiners do not have time to read and mark meaningless words or sentences. Their time is very precious to them and there will not tolerate any time wasting activity by any candidate.

What do Examiners regard as meaningless info?

3. Your scripts is money.
Examiners are paid based on the number of scripts they have answered. This means they will like to mark more scripts within the time available.

4. Examiners have deadline to meet.
Most Examination Bodies give limited time to Examiners within which they must mark the scripts given.
